Marshall Meek

Marshall Meek, an ex-EB, died on 20th August at the age of 88. He was born at Auchtermuchty, Fife, on April 22 1925, and studied Naval Architecture at Dundee and Glasgow Universities, graduating in 1946.

His family were Exclusive Brethren, a fellowship in which he married Elfrida Cox in 1957; they had three daughters. He left the sect soon after; it had barred his mother and sister from the wedding, and was demanding that its adherents leave professional bodies they belonged to. He continued to worship with a different branch of the Brethren movement.

He became one of Britain’s leading naval architects. The first ship he designed for Blue Funnel was Centaur, to carry passengers, livestock and cargo between Malaysia and Western Australia. Next came Priam, with everything possible cleared from the deck for ease of loading and unloading. He designed Britain’s first container ship, and several later ones.

He was awarded the CBE in 1989.

A detailed obituary was published today in the Telegraph. See ... -Meek.html

Just shows what can be achieved when one gets shot of the sucking bog that one's PBCC upbringing can cause.
