A film nominated for the F:ACT Award

The Devil’s Trap, Mitchell Stafiej (Canada). World premiere.

Quote:
When he was 18, the now 25-year-old Lane was kicked out of the fundamentalist Christian cult that his family is still a member of, and they haven’t spoken to him since. ‘The Exclusive Brethren’ is a powerful, rich and extremely sealed off cult that rejects everything – and by that we mean everything! – except themselves as being satanic. Now, Lane decides to visit them on a road trip through fanaticism’s USA and Canada. A dark and nightmarish world of neon crosses, militantly organised sects, deadly alcoholism and drug abuse. And a journey where the outwardly strong and re-socialised Lane confronts the demons of his past with the director Mitchell Stafiej on the passenger seat of his car. But when he finally manages to meet his brother, it is till far from a happy ending.

‘The Devil’s Trap’ is the first film about the notoriously secretive but extensive and extremely well-organised ‘Exclusive Brethren’, but also tells a frightening and far more universal story about how radical parallel societies can dominate their members. Lane’s story about how he as a teenager for the first time saw a film in a cinema is nothing less than a staggering image of the clash between two realities.

Pleased to meet you Mitchell! I think this is the first time we have had a film director on this forum. We are looking forward to seeing your film. Why did you choose that particular subject? Did you have any connection to the Brethren?

Here is a quotation from the Brethren’s revered past leader, John S. Hales. “The whole purpose of movies is to corrupt you, the whole, sole, solitary purpose of movies is to, is to defile you, and corrupt you,”

Maybe you thought no-one could outdo Donald Trump in spouting wild allegations off the top of his head, but anything Trump can do, the Brethren can do better.

I chose the subject because the main character is a close friend of mine and we've always wanted to make something based on his childhood as a member of the Brethren. What started as an idea for a fiction film became this documentary that took about 5 years to make.

It's a pretty intimate film but also far-reaching in that it not only examines the Brethren's effect of ex-members and families, but shows the damage religious cults and sects can have on their members. Our main character is effectively a conduit for the ex-member experience.

Yeah! -- their views on film takes on a whole 15 minute section of the film. :)

Can't wait to share it with you. Hoping for an Australian, U.K., and U.S. premier at some point.

Leah Rimini ( an ex Scientologist herself ) interviewed about 7 or 8 victims of Scientology and documented their stories in a series of episodes .It totally exposed the the lies and duplicity .It was so close to us you could have substituted 'Exclusive Brethren ' and not known what cult you were talking about.

Hopefully the 'Devils trap' will do the same thing...lower the radar they brag they fly under....obviously the brethren will have no problem with this, afterall, they SAY they 'welcome scuteny' don't they?

Question-how widely will this film be shown? Any chance of a major network picking it up?

My evil side wonders what Hales would pay to kill it. They have pots of cash ... and maybe you will need to when they start legal action against you.

You are dealing with the devil ... not just unchristian but ANTICHRISTIAN.

I fully expect they will try as they always have ,to stop anything that exposes them( the 'attack') but eventually the burden of evidence turns the tide of public opinion against them. We saw the same scenario played out by the Catholic Church on abuse issues....they threw everything they had into the fight but eventually capitulated....you can't hide the truth forever
Ngaire Thomas went though the same thing when she published 'Behind Closed Doors' ,intimidation ,threats ,coercion

I wouldn't be surprised to see a class action lawsuit initiated against them some day,be interesting to see the shoe on the OTHER foot..
